The Girl Behind the Desk Still Dreams

You used to dream in full color.

Remember?

There was a time when you painted the sky with possibilities — when you believed your life could be a montage of golden hours, coffee shop scribbles, and applause from strangers who saw your brilliance.

And now?
You blink hard under the white light of office ceilings.
You write emails like you’re solving equations.
You rush through your days like you’re late to something, but you’re not even sure what anymore.

You’re not unhappy. But you’re not lit up either.
Somewhere between “I need to pay the bills” and “I’ll come back to this later,” your wildest dreams sat quietly in the corner and stopped raising their hands.

But here’s the thing — and listen carefully —
They didn’t leave you. You left them. But they’re still there. Waiting. Watching. Whispering.

This is your reminder:
✨ Dear 9-to-5 Girl, your dreams still matter. ✨
No matter how long it’s been. No matter how far you’ve strayed. No matter how “grown-up” you feel. They still matter. You still matter.

You Weren’t Meant to Be Just “Fine”

Let’s talk about it.

When did “fine” become the goal?
You wake up, you check your phone, you scroll past people doing the things you once wanted to do. You dress up, show up, sip coffee that’s too hot, sit in meetings where you nod more than you speak, and somewhere in between deadlines and data, you forget you’re alive.

And here’s what hurts the most:
You were once her.
That girl who scribbled story ideas in the margins of her textbooks.
The one who used to think “someday” was just around the corner.
The one who swore she wouldn’t settle.
Now you’re proud of yourself for just surviving the week — and hey, that’s okay too.

But can I ask something gently?
When was the last time you did something just for you? Something reckless, pointless, joy-filled? Something not monetized, not professional, not “productive”—just pure?

You Can Work a Desk Job and Still Have a Dream

This isn’t one of those posts that tells you to quit your job and move to Bali.
You don’t need to burn bridges to follow your fire.
You can have stability and soul.
You can sign contracts by day and chase your calling by night.
You can be corporate by 9, creative by 9:01.

Because guess what?
Your job pays your bills. But your dreams? They pay your soul.

Let’s stop acting like the two can’t coexist.

You’re allowed to say:

  • “I work in HR and I’m working on a poetry book.”
  • “I’m an analyst and a dancer.”
  • “I sell products by day and make art by night.”

You are never too boxed in. The world may label you, but your spirit is too big for titles.

But I Don’t Have Time… Energy… Support…

I hear you.
You get home drained. Your brain is fried. You just want to collapse into your bed or your favorite series.
You don’t have a “dream team” cheering you on.
You’re tired of starting things and not finishing them.
You fear being “too late.”
And maybe you even feel guilty for wanting more when life is already “okay.”

But let me lovingly call out the lie here:

The dream doesn’t need perfect conditions to start.
It just needs a crack in your schedule and a crack in your doubt—a tiny opening where you choose yourself.

It can be:

  • One hour every weekend.
  • Ten minutes before bed.
  • A single note on your phone where you brain-dump ideas.
  • A Canva moodboard for your imaginary brand.
  • That one Instagram page you start, just for fun.

You’re not too tired.
You’re too disconnected from what energizes you.

What If I Fail?

What if you don’t?

What if that blog turns into a book?
What if your handmade crafts become a brand?
What if your script gets noticed?
What if you never become “famous” but you finally feel alive?

Or better yet —
What if you fail gloriously, fall flat, and realize that you’re still worthy anyway?

Because success is not the point.
The point is self-return.
The point is showing up for the girl you used to be.
The point is looking at her and saying, “Hey, I didn’t forget you.”

Start Small, But Start

  • Make a “dreams” folder. Add to it weekly.
  • Watch one inspiring TED talk instead of one more reality show.
  • Romanticize your creativity. Light a candle. Make it a ritual.
  • Follow people who remind you what’s possible.
  • Say your dreams out loud — even if only to your mirror.

No one needs to get it.
Not your boss. Not your colleagues.
Not even your best friend.

Just you.
Just you remembering who you are and who you still want to be.

Your Dreams Are Not Just Hobbies. They Are Breadcrumbs.

They are breadcrumbs back to your soul.
To the girl who knew.
To the girl who wanted more.
To the girl who looked at the sky and thought, “I want to fly.”

You may never fully leave the 9-to-5.
And that’s okay.
But don’t leave yourself.

You don’t need a grand launch.
You don’t need to go viral.
You just need to begin. Quietly. Imperfectly. Faithfully.

Read This Out Loud

Dear 9-to-5 girl,
You are doing your best.
You are strong, steady, and smart.

But you are also soft.
You are fireflies and Sunday rain and words unsaid.
You are not meant to be just a cog in the system.
You are meant to be a galaxy.

So tonight —
Take off the work badge.
Put down the to-do list.
And sit with your dream.

Let it breathe. Let it speak. Let it stir.
Because it’s still there.
And it still matters.

So do you.
